The history of Italy in the Twentieth Century is full of achievements and humiliations, great edifications and destructions, and above all, irony. Benito Mussolini’s regime is undeniably one of the greatest tragedies of modern Italian history, yet even in those darkest days, the irrepressible artistic energies of the country found expression. Italian artists could still imagine the heroes of their dreams, but heroism in reality was far more difficult to achieve.
